In 1895, Heian-jingu was built for the 1100th anniversary of the founding of Kyoto. Emperor Kanmu ( the 50th emperor) and Emperor Koumei ( the 121st the emperor) (*) were dedicated in Heian-jingu.
It was built as a replica to 5/8 the size of HeianKyo-Dairi-Chyoudouin, the 1st imperial palace. The 33,000m_2 square-meter garden is well known as a very beautiful place of many flowers and plants. On October 22nd, the Jidai- Matsuri is held there every year, and you can see various customs from Heian period to Meiji period.


* Emperor Koumei: he lived in the unquiet daysi1831-1867jHe did not want to open Japan to the world. His younger sister, Kazuno-miya Chikako, married with the 14th Tokugawa shogun, Tokugawa Iemochi for the purpose of uniting the Court and Bakufu(Koubu-Gattai). His 2nd son was Emperor Meiji.
